A Black Bloc formed at the G20 summit in Toronto.

The ‘Black Bloc’ technique operates along similar lines to a flashmob or 4Chan’s Anonymous. They have no leaders and no hierarchy; in fact many of the members have probably never met before. What brings them together is a shared wish to commit acts of civil disobedience without fear of legal reprisals. They form almost out of nowhere, comprised of people who heard about a time and place by word of mouth and turned up dressed all in black, so that no one individual can be singled out as the culprit of unlawful acts even with CCTV evidence. Once their work is done they disperse in all directions, cast off their black clothes and melt unseen back into the crowd.

The anonymity, common goals and spontaneity involved in Black Blocs makes them both a powerful demonstration of anarchy in practice and a force to be reckoned with when taking direct action. At this year’s G20 summit in Toronto they evaded police to attack bank offices in the city’s financial district.
